Age-Adjusted Death Rate due to Cancer

Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator shows the age-adjusted death rate per 100,000 population due to cancer.

Why is this important?

For 75 years, cancer has been one of the top two leading causes of death. The economic toll of cancer is stark: Bankruptcy rates among cancer survivors are more than double those among people who have never had cancer.

Monitoring cancer mortality helps quantify the burden of the disease within different populations and regions and helps identify where additional resources are needed.

More than half the people who die from cancer in Pima County have lung, blood, colorectal, pancreatic, prostate, or breast cancer. Many cancers, including breast and colorectal cancer, have better outcomes when diagnosed and treated early. Some cancers, such as cervical cancer, are preventable through vaccinations and screening.

Understanding trends in cancer mortality informs resource allocation decisions, guiding investments in research, healthcare infrastructure, and public health programs aimed at reducing the burden of cancer.

Cancer mortality in Pima County can be improved by minimizing cancer-causing exposures and increasing health-promoting activities including cancer screenings. Some of this includes: enforcing tobacco control policies, addressing food deserts, and increasing access to health care services, especially cancer screening.
