Primary Care Shortage Areas

Measurement Period: 2023
This indicator shows the number of primary care health professional shortage areas.

Why is this important?

Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) are geographic areas, population groups, or health care facilities that have been designated by HRSA as having a shortage of health professionals. In areas that do not have enough primary care, dental, or mental health providers such as primary care physicians, dentists, nurses, behavioral health clinicians, and other health professional, many people do not get the care they need when they need it. Sometimes, health conditions worsen while people wait for their appointments. In the long run, this increases the cost of care and can lead to more serious health problems.
